Demigods, hot aliens and broken pasts - all due to Jennifer L. Armentrout
I am gonna warn you right away: this will be a love fest to one Jennifer L. Armentrout. If you're one of the people that now thinks: "Who?" you need to get your mind out of the gutter and RESEARCH!!!! This woman will always be one of my favorite authors of all time! You already know how much I love the Lux series, but I'm gonna give you a few more reasons why you need to start reading Jennifer L. Armentrout (or J. Lynn) right now!
The Covenant series (so far)
I have actually waited a few months until starting this series. I loved the Lux series so much that I had no doubt that it would be the same with this one. And that's the reason why I hesitated. Once you start a book, you can't unread it and experience all the things you do when you read it the first time. And once you do start, you wanna go fast because you desperately need to know what is going to happen, but you don't want to rush because that would mean the book is over at some point. The usual dilemma of a book worm. HATED it. But it was all worth it, let me tell you!
So this is the basic story of the covenant series (thanks to Goodreads for that): The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.
This is where it all begins: After the death of her mother (it being described a little more detailed in the pre-quel "Daimon") Alex is being picked up and shipped off to the one place her mother has fled from all those years ago: the covenant. Without knowing the why to the escape, Alex starts to question all the things surrounding her, wanting to discover the truth. But will the truth really bring her the peace she so depserately needs, or will it just start something she has no clue how to finish??
My review: I had read a few reviews of the first book on goodreads, where a lot of people complained about the story having a vast similarity to "Vampire Academy". Don't get me wrong, those people are right, but also wrong in my opinion. They complain about the similarities, but do you know how many books are out there that are similar storywise? There are so many stories out in the world, it's impossibly not to overlap somewhere. And while part of me understands the anger, the other, bigger part, just loves where Jennifer took the story. Yes, Alex and Aiden are like Rose and Dimitri in the beginning, but then the story takes a whole different turn and you SEE that it's nothing like Vampire Academy. Not at all.
This story is so captivating, exciting, heart-breaking, unbelievably well-written, swoon-worthy (helloooooooooooooo AIDEN) and amazing. I could pinpoint a few more adjectives, but I guess you get the main drift. Why? Well, there's Alex for one: She's one of those strong willed, I-don't-take-crap-from-anyone-girls with an attitude. And that's what I like about her:
"Actually, I was prone to random facts of stupidity. I considered it to be one of my talents."
"Daimon- A prequel to Half-Blood" by Jennifer L. Armentrout
That is a good way of describing her. She does a lot of things without thinking, but most of them out of the goodness of her heart, or because her loved ones are in danger. And wouldn't we always try to save the ones we love? You hurt with her, love with her, are happy and sad with her, and she's just so real in her character. She has the necessary depth that makes us all feel with her and emphasize with her .
Another good reason: greek mythology! I have read a few books on the topic now, and it never gets old. This is a complete new take on the issue, and it makes you love and hate the gods altogether. You'll know when you READ IT.
Okay, so here's the main reason you have to read this book: AIDEN ST.DELPHI. Oh my....just writing that name makes me wanna go and swoon a lot more about that guy. Mysterious, dark, moody, and yet there are those moments where he smiles, jokes, laughs, the ones where you go: can I have someone like him please? All of him. In all different forms, with all personality traits and everything: I want Aiden, simple as that. he makes you wanna jump him every time he is on scene, and once you read "Elixir", which is a novella in between from his point of view, you're definitely a goner. If you're not, then I'm not sure what's wrong with you!
"Then, slowly, almost reluctantly, Aiden looked over his shoulder. The moment our eyes met, I felt like Cinderella."
"Pure" by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Their relationship is anything but simple. Pures and half-bloods don't mix. It has been put into Alex' brain ever since she was born. But you never could help who you fall in love. And here, it can only lead to disaster. The kind that clenches at your heart, makes you cry and scream out in frustration, because if Aiden is anything, he's rule. abiding. And while I love that guy to pieces, that was the most frustrating thing of all. Seeing their relationship blossom over the books though is magic, so I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.
"Against all odds and common sense, Aiden had slipped under my skin, wrapped himself around my heart and embedded himself in my bones. He was a part of me and...All of me - my heart and sould - would always belong to him."
"Deity" by Jennifer L. Armentrout
So, if you have not started this series already halfway through reading this review, I strongly suggest you do it not! It's not finished yet, the next and final book "Sentinel" will be out in November....and I cannot wait!!
Onto the next one: Mrs. Armentrout also write New Adult novels under the name of J. Lynn and that one thankfully came up as my book roulette reading now:
Avery Morgenstern escapes her small town life to start anew somewhere completely different. Leaving her demons behind, she wants nothing more than to live her life. Alone, without any complications. But then Cam Hamilton enters her life. College playboy and notorious playboy, he's the last thing that Avery needs. And yet he might be the only to one get her to come out behind those walls she has build up ever since that Halloween party five years ago. She tries everything to stay away from Cam, but he seems to be everywhere and he has his mind set on showing her that he's not the bad boy she makes him out to be. When things from her past seem to be catching up to her, will Cam be there to catch her when she falls, or will there be no safety net for her?
The moment I started reading this book I was sucked into it and captivated. I pretty much finished it in one sitting, simply because it was such an amazing story. We get to see that not all bad boys get the girls right away, but have to work for it. And that underneath all the cocky demeanor might be someone worth loving. And seriously, if you constantly have a six foot three inches, blue-eyed incarnation of hotness around you, you wouldn't be able to withstand for long. But Avery does, because the scars from her past run too deep. This is not a story where everything is peachy right away. There is a lot of hurt involved, healing that both sides need to go through and yet, somehow, there is always that light in your life. And it comes in different shapes and sizes (meaning there is a tortoise involved)
Oh, have I mentioned that Cameron Hamilton is one sexy, irresistible, swoon-worthy and hot character? Need more convincing? There you go:
"And then he kissed me - kissed me like he had right before he'd left that night of our date. Kissed me like he was a man starving for oxygen and I was the only air he needed to breathe."
"Wait for You" - J. Lynn
Mrs. Armentrout just has a way of writing that sucks you in and doesn't let you go. The way she writes makes you laugh, cry and just....you need to read it to understand! It's amazing, simply as that!!!
Awwww, now here we go! Once I get over my erratic beating heart and I start seeing beyond all the hearts that are dancing in my vision, I can write my review for origin, the 4th installment of the Lux series:
If you've read my previews posts, you know how much I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this series. Need a reminder?? I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove it! Yes, that much! And more, if somehow possible. Not that I think it is.
Alrighty book people: So we left off with Katy trapped in a Deadalus facility, and sadly, Daemon on the other side. Oh, and if you know Daemon at all, you know that he does not like it. His whole purpose now is to get Katy out of there. After seeing what time with Deadalus has done with his brother, he doesn't want Katy in there a minute more than she needs to be.
"Did you think you could stop me? I'll burn the world down to save her."
"Origin" - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Daemon does what Daemon does, all the time. And the only thing he can do to get close to Katy is let himself be caught as well. But once he does, what will they do with him, an original Lux? Will he end up like his brother? Or maybe worse? And what is Katy's role in all of this? Will they be able to escape their prison? There are so many questions in this book, and not all of them get immediately answered. Now where would be the fun in that, right?
This next chapter is yet another heart-breaking, exciting, thrilling and awesomely wicked sexy novel that will have you hold onto your side. You will love it, make no mistake. Because like Jennifer L. Armentrout said in one interview: Someone asked her to have more kissing involved. And more Daemon. And we have a whole lot of both. I mean, you have dual POV, which means we get to see inside of Daemon's head.
"But I love her," I said without hesitation.
Dee's eyes widened, probably since it was the first time she'd heard me say it out loud, well, about anyone other than my family. I wished I had said it more often, especially to Kat. Funny how that kind of shit always turns out in the end. While you're deep in something, you never say or do what you need to. It's always after the fact, when it's too late that you realize what you've should've said or done."
"Origin" - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Oh boy what a ride it is. Sooooooooo ridiculously sexy, you wouldn't believe it! The comments, the arrogance, and the ability to make you love him even when he's making comments that would usually earn him a punch in the face. It's just....he's Daemon, and his arrogance is just one of the many reasons we love him, as weird as that may sound.
"You've been awake a while?" When his smile spread, I shook my head. "So you laid there and just let me stare at you like a creeper?" "Pretty much, Kitten. I figured I'd let you get your fill, but then you kissed me and, well, I like to be a bit more involved in that."
"Origin" - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Honestly, Daemon Black is just IT. Wicked sexy, arrogant, cocky, but when he loves, he loves with all he's got. And that's something we get to see a lot of in this book. Was it worth the read? Hell yes! Will I read it again? Oh you can bet I will! Would I recommend it to every freaking creature of this world: Also a resolute yes!
Alright, if you actually made it to the end of this review, then thank you! I hope that at least now you will pick up one of Jennifer L. Armentrout's books, because they are definitely worth it. I mean, there is a reason that I have them in kindle AND paperback version.
Thank you for reading everyone and have a great weekend,
Yvi
