Soulless by Amber Garr

I was given a review copy by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis: "When it comes to death and love…only one is guaranteed.

Four decades ago Nora died. A tragic event for someone so young; however, four decades ago Nora was also given a second chance to walk among the living.

A Death Warden with a mysterious past, her job is to escort the newly expired towards the light, battling with the Soul Hunters who want the freshly dead to help with their own evil purposes buried in the dark.

When Nora’s charges suddenly become targets, she realizes that the hunters are after far more than just souls. A shift in power between good and evil threatens to change everything, risking the lives of the only family Nora has ever known.

Devastated and angry, she’s forced to face the man she once loved - a man who chose darkness over her - in order to find the answers she needs to stop the horror from escalating. Yet, while a lost relationship still haunts her broken heart, a new Warden with secrets of his own will enter the mix and quickly alter everything Nora believed to be true.

Death is unavoidable…but sometimes, so is love."

I was playing book roulette with my Netgalley books because I still have so many to get through, and this one came up. And let me tell you, I'm NOT disappointed it did.

From the first page on I was sucked into the story and the characters. There was just something about this story and the way Amber Garr writes it that doesn't give you the chance of stopping. I wanted, no I needed to keep on reading to know what's gonna happen. Plus, it didn't hurt that when Theron showed up I was all over the moon and in love in two seconds flat. And yes, he's the bad guy.

Nora, a Death Warden who helps souls pass onto the afterlife, is feeling lost after Theron, her mentor and the boy she gave her heart to, chose Darkness over her. Having no luck in doing an excellent job with him always standing in the way, she starts to question her own ability. When things begin to unravel and the solid lines between good and evil don't seem to solid anymore, that's when Nora knows that she needs all the help she can get. Even if it's from the one person she has sworn to hate.

Nora is a likeable character. She still hurts from the loss of Theron but knows that her broken heart is only clouding her ability to think straight and see things for what they are. She is a fighter, and she has a good heart that is always looking for the right path, no matter how hard it may seem.

Now, there's Theron...oh boy...that....oh...wow....HOT!! I mean, it's really funny cause you don't get to see him a lot, but you just can't help but know that there is something amiss the first time you meet him. Yes, he's the bad guy and choose the Darkness over Nora, but maybe it's the romantic in me, but I knew there was more to that story than Amber Garr wanted you to believe! So I held onto that! And this guy makes it so easy to fall for him, no matter if he's the bad guy or not. I mean, he's the brooding, I'll save the day- kind after all! Who wouldn't like that??

Overall the story was something new to me and I liked that a whole lot. I also knew fairly quickly that this book wouldn't be enough for me, that I would want the next story right away...sadly, it seems I still have to wait a while for them!

It's a great adventure story filled with love, betrayal and people having to face the fact that only because you think you know, doesn't mean you actually KNOW.

I loved this story from front to back and am giving it 5-book-boyfriends for sure!! Can't wait for more!!

Always yours,
Yvi
