RED QUEEN (Red Queen Trilogy #1) By Victoria Aveyard - Sarah's Review

Synopsis:

Graceling meets The Selection in debut novelist Victoria Aveyard's sweeping tale of seventeen-year-old Mare, a common girl whose once-latent magical power draws her into the dangerous intrigue of the king's palace. Will her power save her or condemn her?
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver- blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.
To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

MY REVIEW:

EPIC. I loved this book! One of the best debut's of any genre I think I've ever read! I admittedly don't read much YA but this one had everything I could possibly want in a good book, no matter what the genre: an intriguing setting, characters with depth, great action, romance, and twists and turns like you wouldn't believe!

So let me say first that my sis got this for me as a birthday gift and I was actually skeptical at first because though I had heard of it, it was YA and I wasn't sure just how much I'd enjoy it. However, I had enjoyed other YA books with a fantasy theme so I figured, why not? Well let me tell you, this author does NOT shy away from anything.. and that doesn't mean there is sex or anything graphic of that nature (though of course there is a romance element), she just wasn't afraid to make this world realistic in the way that people get hurt, people die, its not always flowers and rainbows, there are REAL issues in this land and its literally life or death situations. I LOVED that. It made everything the "Reds" were fighting for that much more important.

So, I don't want to say too much because I want to keep spoilers out of it, but I will say that the story is solid, it keeps you guessing and its one of those books where you just don't know who to trust. The beginning was probably a bit slower than the rest of the book but I didn't mind that because that's where you have to take your time and slowly learn who is who and what this world is about. And another great thing was that nothing was too confusing and everything gets explained really well as you move along. Plus, things only move faster as the story unfolds and by the end you are left holding your breath! I wasn't able to predict a single thing. I had theories, but you just could never be sure until the very end! Love that.

So basically, I am so glad I own a real, live, copy of this and I will DEFINITELY be re-reading and eagerly awaiting book 2!!!

Way to go Ms. Aveyard!
