Eighth Grave After Dark (Charley Davidson #8) by Darynda Jones

Synopsis:
With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

MY REVIEW:

(SOME SPOILERS ABOUND!)

So let me start by saying I LOVED book 7. This one though felt kind of slow until the end and even then I found myself saying WTF a lot... I mean, one thing thats bothering me... Reyes says Lucifer had him kidnapped from the Loehr's, orchestrated that whole thing. So then while trying to hide your child from him, you name the kid after the same family Lucifer had him taken from??? What am I missing? To me, I have to assume Lucifer will send his spies out to that family eventually being that he obviously knew of them at some point, hence WTFFFF?

Then there's Charley. I thought being we jumped ahead 8 months that she'd make some progress herself but NO. I always knew she loved trying to save people and blah blah but this time, I never wanted to smack her more! She has beep, then whats the first thing she does?? Runs off to hell to get info, again for a missing girl she doesn't even know. Now, again, its not that its a bad character trait but YOU HAVE A KID NOW!!! She continues to just make these poor decisions without telling anyone and risking her life and then expects everyone to just understand because "I'm Charley, gotta love me!" Ugh. I'm just so tired of it. And again, not telling Reyes about his birth parents... I could go on but lets just say I'm disappointed in her in general. Did I care when she lost beep? Yeah it was sad, but she barely spent time with her baby anyway, the missing girl was more important. bleh. Honestly, I felt sadder for Reyes, Osh and the whole gang.

So yes, the ending was cool and things are at least moving ahead and in a new direction that I still am looking forward to finding out what happens. The series is still a favorite but I NEED Charley to start changing. And yes, Reyes keeps things too but for very different reasons, however I am definitely tired of BOTH of them and their secrets and Charley being all, "well see, he keeps things from me too so it doesn't matter" GROW UP BOTH OF YOU!! I am tired of every single book thinking she'll tell Reyes things, for beeps sake if anything.. well obviously being pregnant didn't make her see that honesty was needed in her relationship. Now here again, we have a chance for a new start in book 9 and I'd love to believe that Charley will just let go and TRUST and in the future be more HONEST. Is that so much to ask at almost 10 books in?

We also got a lot more demon info and it only got crazier so while I understood most of it, its only gonna leave my head at some point before book 9 so I hope Ms. Jones refreshes us with the key points, which normally she is very good at. So, will still keep reading, but if things stall out (which, how much can seriously happen until beep is grown?) or if Charley stays the way she's always been, I don't know how much more I can keep reading that repetitive stuff.

All in all, a very cool ending despite my other issues.

MY RATING:  3.5 BOOK BOYFRIENDS
